Mini-Masterworks IV

Mini-Masterworks IV

Cross-cultural Group Exhibition

March 26 - April 16, 2011

The Spirit Wrestler Gallery is pleased to present our fourth installment of Mini-Masterworks that coincides with our 15th Anniversary. This is an appropriate celebration of the three cultures that we represent as each Mini-Masterworks exhibition is an eighteen month journey to find rare art works from Māori of Aotearoa (New Zealand), First Nations of the Pacific Northwest Coast and Inuit of Alaska and Arctic Canada.

For over a decade, the gallery has been a blend of art of these three distinct cultures. Mini-Masterworks is the only exhibition that captures the unique cultural interplay that exists between their arts in the gallery and spans the widest spectrum of materials, techniques and innovation.

We try with each collection to present a different flavour, reveal a few surprises, and introduce new talent as our list of participating artists continues to evolve. The fusion format of the exhibition continues to excite the artists and has proved very popular with our audience, making the arrival of the catalogue in the post a much anticipated event.

Keewatin Women In Stone - Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetuk

Keewatin Women In Stone - Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetuk

March 14 - April 4, 2015

'Keewatin Women in Stone' celebrates the lives of two very different Nunavut artists from the Keewatin region north-west of the Hudsons Bay. Camille Iquilq (1963-2005) and Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok (1934-2012) are representative of two generations and very different upbringings. Lucy was born on the land and experienced the nomadic and traditional way of life before settling in Arviat, whereas Camille was born and raised within the relative comfort of the community of Baker Lake. The collection is a selection of at least 30 stone sculptures from each artist, with pieces ranging from the early 1990s forward. The exhibition contrasts their individual styles yet highlights the same shared values with relationships and the strong bonds within the family.
