Ningeokuluk Teevee continues to do exceptional work, especially when motivated by Inuit oral tradition. She has represented Kiviuq before, the legendary Arctic wanderer, and returns to his odyssey again this year with Kiviuq Nanuqlu. In this story, Kiviuq has killed the female bear’s mate and she is after him. With a sweep of his little finger Kiviuq creates the river between them and begins to drink from it. He encourages her to do the same and in so doing she bloats and dies, releasing a great cloud of mist that obscures the land and water. In Inuit folklore, this explains how fog was made.

“A couple of years ago I made Shaman Revealed, a drawing that was based on the Kiviuq legend of a woman turning into a fox. I wanted to show how people could change from one thing to another but still be the same person. A zipper came to mind and I thought, that’s a really nice idea, so I used the zipper to show how they change.”
