“This was the first large sculpture towards this show and took several months to complete. I really took my time on this sculpture as I felt it should set the bar for the exhibition. I needed to really ensure all the pegging was strong to secure the balance of the drummer. It was a challenge carving the spirit in the antler so thin and then attaching it to the drum dancer to give an impression that the spirit was floating in the air. I also wanted to create the feeling of the skin stretched and wrapped around the frame of the drum and then I had the idea of carving the throat singers in the drum.”
