Raati • Harpoon Tip

by

  • Medium: basalt, granite base
  • Size: 4 × 9.5 × 3.5 inches (excl. base)
  • Reference Code: K90604

“These stone tips had a timber shaft placed into the hammerstoned socket and a cord was attached to the stone harpoon head through the hole drilled through its side. Once thrown the stone harpoon head would come away from the timber shaft but the cord would remain connected to the head for its owner to retrieve along with the prey. These harpoon tips were used in the early settlement stages of Maori in New Zealand, in what is often called the “Moa Hunter Period”. This piece is a stylized form of the traditional form used.”
