“Circular baskets are not woven as frequently as the rectangular baskets seen in New Zealand Maori society today. The circular basket draws on elements of a circular kiekie basket dating to early 1900s. Kete Paua makes reference to the natural habitat of a seafood delicacy paua or abalone, which is protected by the sea plants of Tangaroa—God of the Ocean. Kiekie (Freycinetia banksii) is a weaving material that grows in the native bush of New Zealand”.
