29. Coiled Grass Basket

Garmel Rich was born in Bluff Head and moved to Happy Valley in 1958. She has been making grasswork crafts ever since she was a child. Garmel learned how to do grasswork by watching others, and she has developed her own original style without ignoring the traditional ways. Garmel also enjoys making a variety of crafts including mitts, boots, moccasins with beadwork, dolls and duffle socks. She began sewing in 1979 after attending courses at the Trade School and at the Friendship Centre. Garmel’s aunt is Happy Valley crafts artist Phoebe Rich.
