Inspired by Arlene’s latest attendance at her wilp’s (house) stone feast for her former chief Tsi Basaa. Her whole clan came together from near and far — it was a big feast. The most powerful moments were when all of the Gitkaast came together to sing the traditional welcome, mourning, and the song of the one-horned goat dance. Since Gitkaast is the Grouse clan commonly known as the fireweed clan, Arlene used the grouse as the crest in the crest mask; both the maiden and the grouse have open mouths since this represents her house singing at the feast.
Arlene is a Giskaast from the House of Tsi Basaa. She lives in Gitanmaax near Hazelton, BC. After completing two years at Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art she transferred as a second year student into the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art.
