“Ko Te Koha o Murirangawhenua”

by

This name talks of the koha (gift) by Murirangawhenua of her lower jawbone to her grandson Maui. The metaphor represented here in the gifting of the lower jawbone is the passing of earthly knowledge from the grandparent to the grandchild. This earthly knowledge encompasses the work of manufacturing cordage and fishing implements. Maui used this knowledge to fish up the North Island of New Zealand (Te Ika a Maui).
