The title has nothing to do with being fast or quickness. Instead, it came from just thinking of the wordplay that I like so much with the titling of the teapots. Although, if you look at it in a design sense—the tongue could be licking the split formed by the negative space between the handle and the spout.
Because the word “split” was now running through my head, I split the tongue to go with the title—and then I etched a banana split on the sides of the pot. It is all a play on words—in that off-tangent way that I tend to think at times.
Massie’s work is a reflection of his mixed Inuit, Métis and Scottish heritage. In it, he investigates both traditional and contemporary themes. He has achieved renown for his innovative teapots that combine themes and symbols from his native Inuit culture with European traditions. Massie has been twice short-listed for the coveted Prix Saidye Bronfman and has an extensive international reputation. His work has been shown in North America and Europe, including the National Gallery of Canada. He was elected a member of Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2011.
