Paepae Taputapu (Container for Tools)

  • Medium: tōtara, pāua (New Zealand abalone), flax
  • Size: 9.5 × 18 × 9 inches
  • Reference Code: KX50403

This particular carving depicts Niwareka, who brought weaving from the underworld to Maori, and Mataora, who brought moko (tattoo)… Although it isn’t common practice, I incorporate weaving and moko designs in my carvings. I see carving and weaving as a continuous tradition of arts that work in partnership, as witnessed by their presence on the marae (gathering place).
