The Spirit Wrestler Gallery is pleased to host the eleventh annual exhibition of the staff, students, and graduates of the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art (Northwest Community College) in Terrace, British Columbia. This exhibition is part of their professional development as artists including the role of galleries, commissions, deadlines and all aspects of the changing international art market.
This has been a big year for the school with a proposed expansion to the building and the addition of a third year to the program that would concentrate on career development and jewellery. This year, the students visited various cultural centres and museums in northern British Columbia and received financial support for a trip to Vancouver to see the Art at the Centre Exhibition at the Museum of Anthropology, the Haida Now Exhibition at the Museum of Vancouver and various galleries and studios. They also had a full slate of guest speakers and visiting artists to share their expertise and experiences in the art world.
This year, two students, Sage Nowak and Cora-Leigh Stelumaschuk were awarded scholarships from the YVR Foundation with a commitment to work with a mentor master artist to produce a piece that will be displayed at the Vancouver International Airport for one year. Veronica Waechter, now completing her degree at the Emily Carr University of Fine Art and Design, also received a YVR award as an alumni student. Veronica is the first student to receive a degree from the articulation agreement between the two programs. The Bruce Byfield Mature Student award was awarded to Rose Tashoots and Thomas Fawcett. The Northwest Community College President’s Award was presented to Roger Smith and runner up Jaimie Davis.
The gallery is honoured to host this important exhibition and we invite you to see the work in person. The reception is always a highlight of the year with the gathering of artists, family, clients and supporters to meet the students and view their work.
