The Spirit Wrestler Gallery is very pleased to announce the 10th Annual Exhibition of the students and instructors of the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art. (The art school at Northwest Community College in Terrace BC). For the last decade, the gallery has partnered with the school to showcase the work of the graduating class each year to an international audience - and to offer the students some insight into the role of galleries, commissions, and the greater art market.
This exhibition is the largest exhibition in the ten-year history – 43 pieces. As in previous years, a few of the pieces are not for sale, due to gifts given to family, or in trade for tuition-fees with their band council – we are in agreement with the school that these students should still be able to include those pieces to have the experience of being in a major exhibition alongside their classmates.
This year, two students, Violet Gatensby and Jamie Nole were awarded scholarships from the YVR Foundation. The Bruce Byfield Mature Student Award was awarded to Patrick Bright and Lorraine Wolfe. The Northwest Community College President’s Award was presented to Violet Gatensby.
Over the course of the year the students visited the following institutions: The Museum of Northern British Columbia in Prince Rupert, the K’san Museum, the Nisga’a Museum and the Kitseleas Cultural Centre.
The gallery is honoured to host this important exhibition and we invite you to see the work in person.
