“The Shivering Tupilak”

  • Medium: ivory, serpentine
  • Size: 4.25 × 3.5 × 3 inches
  • Reference Code: LG150801

“This sculpture continues my interest in exploring the theme of Greenland tupilak imagery and this piece was inspired after seeing photos of tupilaks created by Cecilia Kleist in the book “Lords of the Stone” by Alistair Macduff.

My little tupilak is all hunched over and shivering as there is little meat on his bones. He is cold and hungry. It seems on my research that tupilaks apparently can be made up of a series of creatures. This tupilak is part human and part animal. The human face is transforming into wolf and muskox, and his body has a walrus flipper, bear paw and fox tail”.
