This is carved from the little known narwhal’s inner tusk hence the unique patina. All exterior tusk bearing narwhal have this inner tusk that generally ranges from 6” to 9” long. Most hunters, after removing the exterior tusk & muktuk do not cultivate this dense & prized carving material. The artist thinks few know of it’s existence.
Lew Phillip has been carving since 1959. He is now an R.C.M.P. officer in Igloolik, but still carves part-time. He moved to Igloolik in July, 1992. Lew comes from a very artistic family. His father, the late Toongalook (1912-1967) was an artist. Lew is the youngest brother of four Arctic Bay artists. His brother, Philip Qamanirq, is a carver. His three sisters, Imaruituq Taqtu, Rebecca Issuqangituq, and Martha Erkasak Naqitaqvik, all make drawings as well as carvings.
