Northern Exposure 2015

Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art

May 30 - June 20, 2015

The Spirit Wrestler Gallery is pleased to announce the 9th Annual Exhibition of the students and instructors of the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art (Northwest Community College, Terrace, BC). The gallery is proud to have hosted this exhibition every year since the school’s inception and to offer the students a venue to have their work seen by an international audience. This year will also include the work of Dean Heron and Latham Mack, who were, as students, featured in previous exhibitions but are now instructors at the school, as well as being working artists. Dean Heron is also the recipient of one of the YVR Mid Career Artist Award for 2015.

The school has continued to expand its mandate to offer students the widest range of skills to consider a career in the arts. They have created collaborative programs with the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, and with the Toihoukura School of Maori Arts at the Eastland Institute of Technology in Gisborne, New Zealand. Each year they participate in outreach programs, museum visits and studio visits, to be mentored by master artists. Visits this year included the Museum of Northern BC in Prince Rupert, the Nisga’a Museum, and the Ksan Museum in Hazelton. Guest lecturers included Derek and Rose Lardelli from the Toihoukura School of Maori Arts in New Zealand, Bill McLennan (UBC Museum of Anthropology, now retired) who has been a part of the school’s program for all nine years, Tsimshian artist, Morgan Asoyuf Green, and Gary Wyatt from the Spirit Wrestler Gallery. They visited the studios of YaYa Chuck Heit and Roy Henry Vickers in Kispiox.

Danika Naccarella, a first-year student, has received the newly established Northwest Community College President’s Art Award. The college has purchased one of her paintings and a limited-edition print of the same design has been purchased to be presented as gifts. She has also received the YVR Foundation Award.

Fran Johnson and Vivian Watson have received Mature Student Awards presented annually by Bruce Byfield. Kelli Clifton, a former two –time award recipient produced a carved bowl during her mentorship year which will go on display at the Vancouver International Airport for the next year – it is available for sale in the Northern Exposure IV exhibition but the collector would need to support the loan for one year.
