We are excited to announce the exclusive special release of a new blanket by Kenojuak Ashevak titled Tapestry of Owls. This beautiful design is an original limited edition Pendleton blanket produced with the consent and approval of the artist and the West Baffin Co-operative.

Kenojuak Ashevak was an extraordinary artist and long-considered a national living treasure. During her long career she received every award and honour that can be bestowed on a Canadian artist, as her work has consistently delighted audiences around the world. Since our last exhibition for her in 2002, she continued to create many more memorable images and contributed to each Cape Dorset annual print collection. Her artistic career spanned the entire history of Cape Dorset graphics production since 1959—and her legacy as the most celebrated Inuit artist continues to grow stronger by the year. Her art is to be found in major museums, corporations, and private collections internationally. Her 1960 print, the ‘Enchanted Owl’, is considered an icon of Canadian art, and was selected as a postage stamp for Canada. It also has the distinction for being the highest value paid for any Canadian limited edition print. Numerous other images over her long career continue to be among the most sought-after Inuit prints.

In 2002, Kenojuak was invited to design the first Inuit designed blanket for the Pendleton Woolen Mills. While Pendleton has been producing First Nations designed blankets since 1912, this was the first Arctic image. The resulting blanket, entitled Arctic Owl, was released as part of her solo exhibition here at the Spirit Wrestler Gallery—and was extraordinarily well received. Encouraged by this success, in 2009, the Spirit Wrestler Gallery, working in collaboration with Kenojuak Ashevak, Northwest Pendleton, and the West Baffin Co-operative, released a second Inuit blanket, titled Arctic Ravens, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Cape Dorset Print Collection (1959-2009). As one of the two artists still producing at that time that had been featured in the original 1959 print collection, it seemed fitting that Kenojuak should be the artist honoured to represent her renowned community.

The design is a re-interpretation of her print of the same title that we exclusively represented as part of her 2002 solo-exhibition hosted at our gallery. The drawing that became the Tapestry of Owls print was originally created as one of the potential candidates for her first Pendleton blanket (this drawing is now in the permanent collection of the West Baffin Co-operative). Pendleton has now successfully and proudly woven this blanket, honouring as closely as possible the artist’s original design and colours, within the limitations of the looming production process. This blanket is the sixth limited edition collaboration between Northwest Pendleton and the Spirit Wrestler Gallery. The Tapestry of Owls blanket is the third and final design in the Kenojuak trilogy.
