“Many of the great early graphic artists were women, perhaps because of the skills they had developed with their traditional two-dimensional designs for appliqués on clothing. Drawing offered people the opportunity to give shape to stories that had been preserved in oral histories for many generations, and the elders were particularly encouraged to participate. Their leadership and encouragement of the art program was also critical to interesting the younger generation.”
