Peter Sevoga

(1940-2007)
Inuit

Baker Lake, Nunavut Territory, Canada

Peter Sevoga's original and monumental sculptural style earned him renown as an artist by the time he was in his early twenties. Although the subject matter of his work spans from muskoxen to bears, he is well-known for his "group carvings" of mother and child, or family groups. These images are powerful in their "distinguished and distinctively bulging Baker Lake style." (George Swinton, "Sculpture of the Inuit", 1994)

Peter's half-brother, Thomas Sevoga is also an accomplished Baker Lake sculptor. In 1965, Peter Sevoga participated in an experimental print workshop in Baker Lake as both artist and printmaker.
