“This was incredibly difficult to carve as it is such a tiny sculpture made from a small piece of mammoth ivory. Even the rope and harpoon are part of it and not added. I carved the hunter’s hair, the fur around the collar and the creases in the parka, the detailing on his pants, and the stitching on the kamiks (boots). The patina on the ivory and the serpentine is the natural surface and not polished. When carving this hunter so small it reminded me of how small I feel when I am out there on the ice so many miles from anywhere seal hunting on Lake Melville”.
