Doorway to the Underworld • Kuwaha Rua O Hine nui Te Po Pendant

by

Representing a door to a storage pit (rua). For the keeping of root vegetables- eg Kumara (sweet potato). This literal interpretation was beautiful both in a practical and esoteric sense, with Hine Nui Te Po, the female ancestor guardian, who greets those who have passed on from this mortal world, and heralds them onto Te Rarohenga (the spirit world).
