Pudlo Samajualie

Inuit

Cape Dorset, Nunavut Territory, Canada

(1977- )

Pudlo Samajuallie was born October 8, 1977 in Cape Dorset. She comes from a fine artistic family. She is the granddaughter of the late Keeleemeeomee Tunnillie, whose work was represented in the annual print collections throughout the ’60s and ’70s until her death in 1983. Pudlo’s aunt – the late Eliyakota Samayualie – was also a graphic artist with a distinctive symmetrical style. It is interesting to note some subtle stylistic similarities in Pudlo’s and Eliyakota’s work.

Pudlo started drawing while still in high school at Peter Pitseolak School in Cape Dorset. She was actively encouraged by her father, the late Johnny Tunnillie, because one of her names was given to her in honour of a famous Cape Dorset artist – Kananginak Pootoogook. She is relatively new to the studio stable of artists, but her drawings show more and more confidence as she works out her own unique approach to both traditional and contemporary subjects.

Pudlo is represented for the first time in the 2012 print collection with Amiarutiit (Brushes) (2012-23). This image is actually a stilllife, with the brushes arranged and sketched by Pudlo during an art class. She then re-drew them for a recent etching workshop and the image has been beautifully enhanced by the application of chine collé to the etching process.
