I have been working with glass for almost twenty years. I studied glassblowing at Whangarei Polytechnic graduating in 1994. Following this I spent several years working at Sunbeam glassworks in Auckland for Gary Nash before traveling to Europe, first to Italy then to Sweden where I’m currently based.
I’m inspired by Venetian and Scandinavian styles of glassblowing. Venetian glassblowing techniques have been developed over centuries and are often extremely elaborate requiring years of dedication to perfect. Traditional Scandinavian glass on the other hand is often very clean cut with a focus on strict design guidelines which seem to rely heavily on the natural characteristics of glass. For me the fascination is finding a balance between the two, using both styles to find a middle ground that suits my own way of working, whilst also adding influences from my cultural heritage and life experience.
