Don Brooks
Tsimshian (Lax Kw’alaams) artist
Don Brooks was born in New Westminster, British Columbia in 1959. He is a member of the Lax Kw’alaams band of the Tsimshian nation from Port Simpson, BC.
Vancouver offered him limited opportunity to study Northwest Coast art and particularly Tsimshian style, so he enrolled in the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Art in Hazelton, BC in 1993. He completed the four-year program and then apprenticed with Ken Mowatt for Northwest Coast design and printmaking; and Vernon Stephens for sculpture. His first teacher was Brad Hunt.
