Darren Bolton was born in Klemtu and raised in the Village of Hartley Bay (Gitga’ata). His mother is Haida from Old Massett, Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), BC. His father is Tsimshian from Hartley Bay, BC.
At the age of 11, Darren started learning Northwest Coast art from his cousin and friend, Heber Reece. Darren currently resides in Gitaus, BC where, while working on the Kitselas Canyon Project, he met Ken McNeil, Stan Bevan dnd Dempsey Bob, world-renowned artists. Darren’s interest for art was rekindled while working around Mr. Bevan and his crew. Through this experience, Darren had the honour and opportunity to be lead hand in the raising of the Kitselas Beaver and Bear Totem Pole. This was a momentous occasion as it was the first pole raising of the Kitselas people in 140 years.
“My first carvings were just the beginning of a journey I have been waiting for all my life.”
