Matthew Shimout

Inuit

Repulse Bay, Nunavut Territory, Canada

(1967- )

Matthew Shimout was born March 22, 1967 in Coral Harbour where he lived for 24 years before moving to Repulse Bay in 1991.

He started carving when 12-years-old and still at school. He watched his father, Anakudlak Shimout, carve and then started to carve with him. His brothers, Daniel and Adamie, and his brother-in-law Leo Napayok Sr. also all carve.

He spends time on the land hunting and fishing. He often carves on the land at the same time. He carves often in antler making totem-style carvings.

He has an Inuit name, Agulak, but says he has no idea what it means.
