Hooper Bay, Alaska, USA

(1947- )

Evelyn Douglas is a Yup’ik Eskimo artist born in 1947 in the village of Hooper Bay, Alaska. Hooper Bay is located in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, a broad marshy plain that produces grasses that are exceptionally well-suited to making the coiled- grass baskets for which the village is famous. The village of Hooper Bay has produced many extraordinary basket makers but Evelyn Douglas ranks among the very best.

Evelyn Douglas is a highly skilled weaver of traditional Yup’ik coiled grass baskets. She first learned her craft as a young girl watching her mother and other women in her community weave baskets. Ss, she has become renowned for her very tight, fine-weave and exquisite geometric designs that has become her trademark.

Evelyn, who has been making coiled grass baskets for more than 30 years, is admired for her mastery of technique and the unique patterns of her baskets. She has also demonstrated her skills at the 2006 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C.
