After Fabian Oogaaq’s parents died mysteriously, he was adopted by relatives. His adoptive brother Timothy Qayaqsaaq is a Pelly Bay carver. Oogaaq’s wife Leonie Aningnaq Oogaaq is also a carver. Oogaaq has spent much of his life suffering from rheumatism of the joints and finds winter to be the most productive time for carving. In 1985, Oogaaq survived an attack by a polar bear outside his home in Pelly Bay.
In 1963, Pope John XIII was presented with an ivory carving made by Fabian Oogaaq.
