Darrell White was born in Queen Charlotte City, Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) in 1960. He is a member of the Dadens Yokulanass Raven Clan from the village of Masset. The family moved from the island in 1964 and lived in various communities before settling in Powell River. He remained in Powell River until the age of 41 and was employed as a welder working largely on contracts for the pulp and paper industries and the United States military.
He is the great great grandson of renowned carver, Charles Edenshaw and a cousin to the contemporary carvers, Christian White and Jim Hart. His sister April is also an artist. Despite growing away from the culture, the family made many trips home and he witnessed ceremonies and the developing careers of the Haida artists. He carved occasionally until later in life when he chose to leave welding and accept an apprenticeship position with his cousin Christian White.
Darrell is largely a self-taught artist. He studied the works of Haida master carvers in books over many years before committing to carving full time.
