Andy Mamgark started carving in 1958 when he was living in Rankin Inlet. He later moved to Tikirarjuaq (Whale Cove) in 1961 and then on to Arviat in 1965. Mamgark liked working with stone and has produced a variety of subject matter ranging from owls, walrus, and polar bears to mother and child images.
Mamgark’s wife, Eva Seuteruk Mamgark, his son Johnny Kopanuak Mamgark, and his daughters Susan Pauppa Mamgark and Martha Katuak Mamgark are all artists in Arviat.
Mamgark died tragically in the summer of 1997 as a result of a carving accident.
