Alvin Adkins


(1959- )

Alvin Adkins was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia in 1959. He is a member of the Raven clan of the Haida nation and his sub crests are the Bear and Killer Whale. His brother, Rick Adkins, is also an artist specializing in jewellery.

His early training began in 1971 when he enrolled in carving programs taught by master Haida artist, Freda Diesing, at the carving centre at the Museum of Northern British Columbia in Prince Rupert. He has also studied with Dempsey Bob, Don Yeomans, Bill Reid and Robert Davidson.

He is largely self-taught as a gold and silversmith, which has become his primary focus in recent years. He has also produced a number of limited edition prints and will occasionally work in argillite and wood.
