“Jamasie is from a family of artists. He is the son of carvers Oopik and Mark Pitseolak and grandson of the noted carver and photographer Peter Pitseolak, who was his first inspiration. Pitseolak began his career at a young age, selling his first works to the Hudson’s Bay Company. He studied painting under Peter John Voormeij. Feeling a lack of connection with the more traditional themes of hunters and wildlife generally found in Inuit sculpture, in the late 1990s he began incorporating more unconventional and modern imagery, such as machinery with movable parts, motorcycles, guitars, and other items from everyday life, often with a sense of humor or irony. Using a “collage-like” style rather than working from a single block of stone, Pitseolak painstakingly assembles his sculptures from individually carved pieces.”
