Art is a safe haven from my life of addictions. I have always pushed away my culture because I never knew much about it. Art has given me back a huge chunk of that back: my cultural identity. I started my healing journey with weaving cedar hats and beading medallions.
In this course I have begun drawing form-line, carving with alder and cedar. Painting with acrylics. I have also challenged myself to work with imitation gold leaf as well as inlaying abalone and operculum shells.
At the beginning of our course we had the opportunity of making our own carving knives. Our handles are made out of yellow cedar and tied off with black twine. We have a field trip to the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver as a part of our art history. In this museum I will be looking at pieces that my great great grandfather Frank Bolton made.
My future plans are to come back to Freda Deising for year two. With my continued venture I would like to make regalia and designs for my cedar hats.
