Born in Wairoa, Dan is of Ngati Kahungunu descent. He attended Te Aute College in Hawkes Bay where amongst other studies he excelled in art. After college Dan moved to Rotorua and studied at Waiariki Institute of Technology gaining the Diploma of ‘Art, Craft and Design Maori’. Among the tutors were George Andrews and Lionel Grant who became the greater influences in his art development. After completing his diploma Dan began his professional art career in 1999.
In recent years Dan has expanded his practice and knowledge base, by working with Brian Massey (winner of Ellerslie Garden Show and Chelsea UK Garden Show) as set designer on the internationally acclaimed ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. Working with Laurie Steer, Dan was senior sculptor on the Te Puke Red Seeds project in 2004. He also tutored ceramics at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, drawing and design at Te Puia in Rororua and is currently tutoring Art at Te Wananga o Aotearoa in Rotorua.
Dan now resides in Papamoa, where he produces art from his home studio and has work in private collections both nationally and internationally. “I am a great believer in getting your hands dirty when it comes to making art. This is the best way to gain a proper understanding of the materials and the process. By achieving this I feel you can then give our ancient art forms the respect that they deserve.”
