“My journey began in the small town of Dannevirke (Manawatu) where as a young man I began my love of Maori art. As an artist my background includes and began through Whakairo, tattooing and painting with acrylics and enamel. It was through the arts that I learnt more about my iwi and the tikanga associated with Whakairo. I left my art for a while and joined a shearing gang. However as a result of a shearing accident I have found my way back to the arts and I am now pursuing a pounamu career. I was introduced to the Rakai studio and have gone from strength to strength. I am now pursuing a pounamu carving career full time. I am passionate about pounamu carving and in the right workshop studio environment this is a new and exciting career opportunity for myself and family.”
