My name is Yvonne Starr. I was born in Vancouver, BC, and my family is from Kispiox, BC. I am part Gitxsan and Heiltsuk Nation.
I have been interested in art all my life. In high school, I followed the teacher’s curriculum. During this time, I would try to incorporate my First Nations culture as much as possible. Before graduating in 2012, I heard about Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art at Northwest Community College in Terrace, BC.
In the summer of 2014, I had the opportunity to work with Youth Helping Youth: Grease Trail Arts. It was here that I learned about and created various First Nations merchandise such as medicine pouches, dream catchers, bentwood box kits and smudge box kits. These items were later sold at KSAN in Hazelton, BC.
“My intent as an artist is to connect my cultures history and stories to create deeper pieces of art.” —Yvonne Starr.
