Temela spent most of his childhood living on the land, where he learned hunting and trapping skills. He lived in Iqaluit for twenty years before settling in Kimmirut (Lake Harbour) in 1978, but still enjoys hunting in outpost camps away from the settlement. He began carving in 1965, and has carved using a variety of materials including stone, antler, bone and ivory. A self-taught carver, Temela is a talented and prolific artist.
