Siassie Kenneally

Inuit

Cape Dorset, Nunavut Territory, Canada

(1969- )

Siassie Kenneally was born in 1969 at Iqalugajuk, one of the traditional camp areas along the south Baffin coast. She grew up in Cape Dorset and at her family’s outpost camp, Shatuqituk. Her father is the late Qaqaq Ashoona, a highly respected carver and son of the late Pitseolak Ashoona. Her mother, Mayoreak Ashoona, is a graphic artist and her work is also well known. Siassie credits both her mother and grandmother as important artistic influences in her life.

Siassie started drawing in 2004, joining her cousins Suvinai Ashoona and Annie Pootoogook in the Kinngait Studios.

“Siassie talks passionately about how the time she spent growing up at her father [Qaqaq]’s camp, [Satirittuq] has been the inspiration for her work. In November 2007, when she was invited to Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, to do a presentation of her work, her eloquence on this topic impressed the audience. She is very environmentally conscious and is able to convey her love of the land like no other of the “younger” generation in Cape Dorset today.”
